What is CYI?
The Chinese Youth Initiative (CYI) is a program that enables youth to take an active role in the Chinese community through activities that encourage a positive identity, community responsibility, awareness, and action. CYI youth meet and run activities year-round.
CYI also has a seven-week summer internship that gives participants the opportunity to learn about and participate in the Chinese community.

The first three weeks are filled with educational workshops, discussions,
videos, guest speakers, and fieldtrips. During the final four weeks, each intern will apply what s/he has learned to work on a project related to current community concerns or areas of the Chinese Progressive Association's work. Examples of past projects include helping to organize against the construction of an eight-floor parking garage in the center of residential Chinatown and documenting the life histories of several immigrant elders. Participants will receive a stipend of $270 every two weeks for the duration of the internship.

When does the 2005 program begin?
CYI 2005 will begin July 5 and end August 20. Participants must make a commitment of approximately 20 hours per week, including some evening and weekend activities. For the first three weeks, interns' schedule will be from Monday through Thursday, 10am to 3pm. The schedule for the following four weeks will be arranged according to the projects selected.

Who can apply?
CYI is open to young men and women between the ages of 15 and 19. We especially encourage Chinese bilingual youth and those youth with a real interest in learning about and working in the community to apply.
